In 1914, Mizusawa Komuten was established in Tokyo. Bunjiro Mizusawa, the founder, was a skilled master carpenter. At the same time, he had an enterprising sensitivity that was cognizant of the emerging times. One of his realizations was how he could manifest the Japanese traditional technology of building with wood even as the traditional Japanese way of life was rapidly changing due to westernization and modernization after the Meiji Restoration. With this vision, he challenged the modernization of “Sukiyazukuri,” the traditional style of residential construction.

Since the establishment of our company over one hundred years ago, the Japanese sense of beauty and lifestyle continue to evolve. The demand for our talents and skills also continues to drastically change. Accordingly, we work not only on traditional wooden residential structures but also on contemporary-style residences incorporating the latest building technology and resources available today.

However, we believe that it is our obligation to pass down our unique understanding of how to use wood, the most precious building resource in traditional construction technology that has been the key factor since the establishment of our company and developed by our dedicated and skilled craftsmen for the past 100 years. This is the true mission of Mizusawa Komuten, the honorable and respected group of craftsmen that can truly express “Iki,”-- the unique sense of beauty of Edo (Tokyo), through the highest quality of craftsmanship and design.
